Paid Advertising I: Google Ads & Pay-Per-Click

Signature Course No. 126 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.

An agentic, mastery-based AI learning platform.

A New Kind of Learning

Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.

Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.

The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.

The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.

Meet The Lighthouse Coach

A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing

The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Paid Advertising I: Google Ads & Pay-Per-Click course, in the Sales, Service & Revenue category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.

You work on one consistent set of figures throughout — one fictional advertiser, Willow Creek Garden Supply, whose complete thirty-day record you learn whole and recompute at every step: the Coach teaches and questions, you price, audit, and plan, and what you produce is what gets checked.

This is the course for owners and founders spending real money on Google Ads who need to know whether the clicks being bought are worth their price, marketers and marketing managers who run search campaigns and must defend the spend with figures, operators moving into growth roles who want to buy traffic the way they would buy stock, and freelancers and consultants who need a standard of work they can show.

It works in the order a buyer actually needs it: first, Module 1 — Intent, the Auction, and the Shape of the Account — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Account Audit and Rebuild Plan; then, Module 2 — The Offer, the Bid, and the Evidence — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Thirty-Day Payback Plan.

You finish by proving the whole course — in The Account Audit and Rebuild Plan and in The Thirty-Day Payback Plan. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.

This course runs on one advertiser, one account, and one set of figures, and nothing else: every worked number is computed from Willow Creek's stated record or is a small, self-contained exercise that never contradicts it.

No real company, platform statistic, or market figure is named anywhere in the course, and where a working rule is needed, it is stated as this course's own rule, to be judged by results — not as a platform fact. The auction and quality mechanics are taught in working form and labeled as such. And the stance holds throughout: a click is a purchase, not a prize.

Both capstones produce real artifacts — an account audit and rebuild plan, and a thirty-day payback plan with its judging table named before the month begins — not just ideas about advertising.

This is the one hundred and twenty-sixth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

The Method

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.

1

Diagnose

The Coach starts where the course starts: with intent, not bids. Nobody searches by accident — every query is a need stated in the searcher's own words — and if intent is misread first, every later figure is priced from a misunderstanding. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundation you only think you have.

2

Learn & Practice

Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.

3

Prove

Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.

4

Capstone

Finish with two capstones — The Account Audit and Rebuild Plan for Module 1 and The Thirty-Day Payback Plan for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.

The Course Content

What You'll Learn

Every second, people type what they want into a search box — a product, a fix, a price, a place — and in the fraction of a second before the results appear, an auction decides which advertisers may stand in front of that stated need, in what order, and at what price per click.

This course teaches you to work that auction as a buyer, not a gambler. You will learn to read search intent in a query, to work out what a click is worth before you bid on it, and to understand how the auction and its quality signals set the price you actually pay. You will build an account the way a good shop is built — one clear intent per shelf — with match types and negative keywords as your controls on what you do and do not pay for.

Then you will write ads that answer the query in front of them, choose bidding strategies and budgets with your eyes open, count conversions honestly, make the landing page keep the ad's promise, and read the five core measures — cost per click, click-through rate, conversion rate, cost per acquisition, and return on ad spend — as one connected chain instead of five separate trophies.

This is the search course: intent you can read in the query itself. Its sibling, Paid Advertising II: Meta Ads That Pay Back, covers paid media where the audience is targeted rather than the question answered; the two meet only where measurement is shared, and this course stays on search ground throughout.

What you will learn

  • Read search intent in a query and work out what a click is worth before bidding
  • Explain how the ad auction and quality signals set position and price
  • Structure an account and campaigns around one intent each, and control matching with match types and negatives
  • Write search ad copy and use assets that answer the query, and align the landing page with the promise
  • Choose bidding strategies and set budgets that pace spend against value
  • Set up conversion tracking for search that counts what counts — once, and in the right column
  • Measure cost per click, click-through rate, conversion rate, cost per acquisition, and return on ad spend as one chain, and improve the account by tested changes

Who It's For

Built for the person whose money buys the clicks

Paid Advertising I: Google Ads & Pay-Per-Click is for owners and founders who are spending real money on Google Ads — or paying someone who is — marketers and marketing managers inside companies and agencies who must defend the spend with figures, operators moving into growth roles who make decisions with budget consequences, and freelancers and consultants who manage accounts for clients and need every figure recomputed and every claim traceable.

This course assumes comfort with arithmetic and a willingness to work in an ads account or a spreadsheet, in the Sales, Service & Revenue category, and it assumes no prior advertising experience: if you can divide a cost by a count and say what the answer means, you have everything this course requires to start.
