Personal Investing: Building Wealth Step by Step
Signature Course No. 207 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.
A New Kind of Learning
Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.
Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.
The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.
The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.
A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing
The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Personal Investing: Building Wealth Step by Step course, in the Sales, Service & Revenue category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.
Most people do not fail at investing because they chose the wrong fund. They fail because they never made a plan, or made one they could not keep: money invested before the safety net existed, a horizon stated in wishes rather than dates, a mix chosen by a headline, contributions that depended on willpower at the end of a tired month, and a sale made in panic when prices fell. This course reverses that order. It builds the plan first — goal, date, price tag, horizon — then the safety net, then the accounts, then the mix, then the system that keeps contributions flowing and fees low, and only then teaches you how to live with the plan when markets test it.
You learn the foundations in order. Name a goal so precisely that you can price it; match each goal to a horizon and let the horizon govern what you own; hold cash for emergencies before you take market risk; use an employer plan and tax-advantaged accounts at literacy level; choose an asset mix for a stated purpose; and use broad, low-cost index funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) as tools rather than as bets.
Then you keep the plan alive. Automate contributions so saving happens before spending tempts you, see fees as a compounding force rather than a footnote, rebalance a mix back to its chosen shape, contribute steadily through good and bad markets, behave well in a drawdown, and adjust the plan when life changes — keeping the whole thing going for decades with a review rhythm that ignores noise.
It works in two movements. First, Module 1 — Foundations: Goals, Safety, Accounts, and the Mix — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The One-Page Household Plan; then, Module 2 — Keeping the Plan Alive: Systems, Costs, Falls, and Life Changes — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Life-Proofed Plan.
Both capstones produce real artifacts — The One-Page Household Plan, a one-page household wealth plan built in the correct order for the course's running household; and The Life-Proofed Plan, a revised, life-proofed plan for the same household ten years on, with a written behaviour rule for the next market fall. Each capstone is also run on your own ground: your own live household finances, with your real income, real dates, and real stakes.
The honesty discipline is part of the course. This course teaches method, not picks. It never tells you what to buy, never promises a return, and never presents a projection as a forecast: every projected figure is labelled with its assumptions — the rate, the horizon, and the contributions. It is education, not personal financial advice, and every tax and account specific is framed to check against current rules and your own plan documents.
The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.
Personal Investing: Building Wealth Step by Step is Signature Course No. 207 in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.
Diagnose
The Coach starts where the course starts: with what you actually bring. Every concept opens with three questions. They are not a quiz; they locate where you actually stand — what you already do well with money, and where the common trap is waiting for you. Your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.
Learn & Practice
Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.
Prove
Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.
Capstone
Finish with two capstones — The One-Page Household Plan for Module 1 and The Life-Proofed Plan for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.
What You'll Learn
Start with the goal. Every dollar you invest has a job to do, and until you name that job precisely — job, date, and price tag — you cannot judge whether any investment is suitable, whether progress is on track, or whether a sale is wise.
Module 1 builds the foundations. Horizon governing what each pot may own, a safety net sized from your own essentials, payday order, employer plans and tax-advantaged accounts at literacy level, the three risks separated, a mix chosen as checkable numbers, diversification without clutter, and plain broad funds read by their job descriptions.
Module 2 keeps the plan alive. The plan compressed into one written page, contributions automated, fees totalled as a compounding headwind, the mix rebalanced by rule, steady contributing through the cycle, and a fall protocol written in calm weather.
And it lasts for decades. Life changes triaged to the facts they actually change, retirement approached as a sequence of spending years, and a yearly review rhythm that amends only on facts and answers noise with one question: which fact on my page has changed?
What you will learn
- Name any financial goal by its job, its date, and its price tag, and match it to a time horizon — and build a safety net of cash before taking investment risk, sized to your own essentials
- Use employer plans and tax-advantaged accounts at literacy level, including the employer match — and choose an asset mix for a stated horizon, explaining what each part of the mix is for
- Use broad, low-cost index funds and ETFs, tell a fund's job from its sales pitch, automate contributions, keep fees in plain sight, and rebalance a mix back to its chosen shape
- Behave well in a market fall — what to do, what not to do, and how to decide in advance — and adjust the plan for life changes and for the approach to retirement, without abandoning it

Built for earners building from an ordinary income
Earners building from an ordinary income, and beginners who feel behind — people with a paycheque and a household budget who want to turn part of that income into lasting wealth, and readers who have never invested, or who hold scattered accounts they do not understand, who want one clear sequence to follow.
Households planning together, and workers with an employer plan they barely use — partners, parents, and single earners who need a plan both adults in a home can explain in plain words, and anyone who wants to understand the match, the contribution choice, and the account options in plain language.
Savers approaching a life change — a new child, a new job, a move, or retirement on the horizon — who need to adjust a plan without abandoning it. The course assumes comfort with basic arithmetic and a household budget you can describe; it assumes no investing experience, no finance background, and no existing portfolio.
