Power BI: Dashboards That Drive Decisions
Signature Course No. 113 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.
A New Kind of Learning
Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.
Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.
The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.
The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.
A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing
The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Power BI: Dashboards That Drive Decisions course, in the Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being category. It does not play videos at you.
It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room. You work in Power BI Desktop alongside the Coach throughout: the Coach teaches and questions, you build, and what you build is what gets checked — with a pencil.
This is the course for working professionals who report numbers, spreadsheet-strong beginners to Power BI, analysts adding this product to their toolkit, managers who commission dashboards, and small-business owners and team leads who want one trusted page for the weekly decision.
It works in the order the craft itself runs: first, Module 1 — From Raw Data to Trusted Numbers: Getting Data In, Modeling It, and Measuring It Right — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Trusted Model; then, Module 2 — From Numbers to Decisions: Visuals, Dashboards, and Sharing With Confidence — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Decision Dashboard.
You finish by proving the whole course — in The Trusted Model and in The Decision Dashboard. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.
Every figure in this course comes from one small dataset, stated in full, small enough to check by hand. If you add the parts in this course, you get the whole — every time, in every concept, in both capstones. A dashboard that cannot survive a pencil does not deserve an audience.
Trust is the product; reconciliation is how it is earned, in public, one checked total at a time. Buttons are named here, menus are named here, and formulas are written out in full — because in a tool course, vagueness about the tool is not humility; it is a gap in the teaching.
This course carries no certification claim from Microsoft and no examination-preparation claim; Microsoft is named only descriptively, as the maker of the product.
Both capstones produce real artifacts — a trusted Fernwood model with its signed reconciliation page, and a published, decision-ready dashboard with its operating plan and handover survival kit — not just ideas about dashboards.
This is the one hundred and thirteenth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone
Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.
Diagnose
The Coach starts where the course starts: with the decision, not the data. A report whose results change nothing is a report nobody needs — so the decision, its owner, and the action for each result come first. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.
Learn & Practice
Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.
Prove
Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.
Capstone
Finish with two capstones — The Trusted Model for Module 1 and The Decision Dashboard for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.
What You'll Learn
Power BI is easy to open and easy to misuse. In an afternoon, anyone can connect a spreadsheet, drag fields onto a canvas, and produce a page full of colorful charts — and in the same afternoon, without noticing, double-count revenue through a bad relationship, publish a truncated axis that manufactures growth, or share a file whose numbers quietly went stale last month.
This course teaches Power BI the way a careful professional actually uses it, in the order the work actually flows. You will learn to bring data in through connectors and shape it in Power Query so the cleaning happens once, on refresh, instead of by hand every week.
You will learn how Power BI thinks about data — tables, relationships, grain, and the star schema — so your model helps you instead of ambushing you. You will learn the difference between a measure and a calculated column, and the core DAX patterns every working report depends on: totals that reconcile, CALCULATE and filter context, and time intelligence at a foundations level.
Then you will learn the second half of the craft: choosing visuals that tell the truth, building a dashboard page around one decision question, adding slicers and drill-through with guardrails, publishing and sharing safely, keeping published numbers fresh, and governing the result so it deserves the trust a dashboard asks for. By the end, you will not just be able to build a dashboard. You will be able to prove its headline number with a pencil — and that is the standard every concept in this course is held to.
What you will learn
- Get data in and shape it cleanly — connectors and Power Query, done once and repeated on refresh
- Model data correctly — tables, relationships, star schema, and measures in their proper place
- Write core DAX measures — totals, CALCULATE and filter context, and time intelligence at foundations level
- Build, publish, and govern dashboards that drive decisions — honest visuals, safe sharing, reliable refresh
Everything in the course
- All 18 concepts of Power BI: Dashboards That Drive Decisions, in 2 modules

Built for the person whose numbers have to be believed
Power BI: Dashboards That Drive Decisions is for working professionals who report numbers — operations, sales, finance, and service leads who live in spreadsheets today and need reports that update themselves and can be defended in the room where they are shown, spreadsheet-strong beginners to Power BI who have never built a data model, written a measure, or published a report, analysts adding Power BI to their toolkit — Power Query, relationships, DAX, the service, and refresh, managers who commission dashboards and need to read one critically,
and small-business owners and team leads who want one trusted page for the weekly decision, without hiring a specialist to build it.
Every figure in this course comes from one small dataset, stated in full, small enough to check by hand. If you add the parts in this course, you get the whole — every time, in every concept, in both capstones. A dashboard that cannot survive a pencil does not deserve an audience.
This course assumes general workplace fluency, comfort with everyday arithmetic — totals, averages, rates, and percentages you can check with a pencil — and basic spreadsheet familiarity. It assumes no programming, no statistics, and no earlier Signature Course. If you can read a table and you care whether a total is true, you have everything this course requires.
