Practical Leadership

Signature Course No. 227 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.

An agentic, mastery-based AI learning platform.

A New Kind of Learning

Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.

Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.

The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.

The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.

Meet The Lighthouse Coach

A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing

The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Practical Leadership: Leading Day to Day course, in the Leadership & Management category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.

Leadership, for most working people, is not a speech, a strategy, or a title. It is Tuesday. It is the ten minutes before the shift starts when you decide what matters today. It is walking the floor and noticing the pallet in the wrong place, the new person struggling quietly, the regular who is not herself. Nothing here is grand — that is the point. Day-to-day leadership is a set of ordinary moves, done early and done consistently.

You learn to run the day itself. Start the day on purpose with three priorities chosen by consequence, be present where the work happens without hovering, run a huddle that earns its minutes, hand work off as a complete contract so it comes back done, follow up without checking up, and speak about the work in the moment — correcting specifically, praising specifically — while reading the room's small signs before they announce themselves as crises.

Then you lead the people through the week. The difficult conversation held early and plainly; lateness and absence handled from a record, fairly to the person and to the colleagues who cover; friction stepped into before sides harden; a good person coached through a bad week; a new hire given a plan; requests from above answered with honest arithmetic; and every promise kept small enough to keep — because a team's trust is built or spent in exactly those small denominations.

It works in two movements. First, Module 1 — Running the Day: Priorities, Presence, and the Work Itself — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with One Shift, Led Well; then, Module 2 — Leading the People: Conversations, Friction, and Follow-Through — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with A Week, Led Well.

Both capstones produce real artifacts — One Shift, Led Well, a complete shift plan for one Tuesday at a distribution depot, closed with its priorities scored and its handover written; and A Week, Led Well, an assembled week of conversations, plans, and audited promises that produces the artifact this course exists to leave you with: your own day-to-day leadership routine, written for your real team, ready to run the following Monday.

The honesty discipline is part of the course. This course teaches the day-to-day craft of frontline and mid-level leaders, and stays there — no vision-setting, no reorganization, no multi-year strategy. It prints no invented statistics, no percentages about leaders or teams, and no folklore presented as research: every figure is a scenario's own headcount, time, or workload, kept internally consistent, or a count you make from your own team.

The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.

Practical Leadership is part of The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

The Method

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.

1

Diagnose

The Coach starts where the course starts: with what you actually bring. Every frontline leader holds two jobs inside one shift — the work itself, and the leading — and a leader can fill a whole shift with the first, work harder than anyone present, and leave the second completely undone. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.

2

Learn & Practice

Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.

3

Prove

Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.

4

Capstone

Finish with two capstones — One Shift, Led Well for Module 1 and A Week, Led Well for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.

The Course Content

What You'll Learn

Early beats big — the timing is the craft. Almost every concept is the same move at a different address: do the small, plain thing early, while it is still small and plain. Feedback given today is a sentence; feedback saved for a month becomes a meeting.

Module 1 runs the day. Presence before paperwork: choose the morning, walk the floor, run the huddle, hand work off so it sticks, follow up without hovering, and read the room's small signs while they are still small.

Module 2 leads the people. Difficult conversations held early and plainly, patterns handled from a record without drama, friction stepped into before sides harden, and a struggling colleague coached openly rather than managed around.

And it closes the loop. Promises made small enough to keep and kept, handovers that carry risks, promises, exceptions, and people — and the leader's own bad days led with the same honesty asked of everyone else.

What you will learn

  • Start each day with clear priorities and a presence your team can actually use — the morning chosen, the floor walked, the huddle kept brief and useful
  • Delegate work that sticks — complete contracts with playback and support — and follow up in a way that helps instead of hovering
  • Give feedback, praise, and difficult conversations in the moment — small, specific, soon, plainly and fairly
  • Handle the human friction of daily work — absence, lateness, friction, and bad weeks — and follow through on every promise you make

Who It's For

Built for people who lead the day

Supervisors and shift leads — who run a floor, a desk, a crew, or a department for a shift at a time and carry the day's problems as they land.

Team leads, charge staff, and new managers in their first years — who lead peers they also work beside, often without a manager's distance, and who were good at the work itself and are discovering that leading the work is a different craft entirely.

Frontline leaders in any setting, and experienced hands whose day has outgrown their habits — warehouse, clinic, retail, field service, hospitality, office — whose team is in the same building, on the same shift, facing the same customers, patients, or deadlines. The course assumes a real team and a real working day: no earlier Signature Course, no particular industry, and no authority beyond the shift or team you actually lead.
