Product Management Foundations
Signature Course No. 141 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.
A New Kind of Learning
Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.
Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.
The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.
The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.
A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing
The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Product Management Foundations course, in the Leadership & Management category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.
This is the course for new product managers who need the full craft in order — and for founders and owner-operators who are their own product manager whether they use the title or not, whose bets come out of their own pocket.
It is also built for designers, engineers, and analysts moving toward product work, who already own part of the craft and want the whole picture — and for managers of product people, who must judge discovery, roadmaps, and launch claims made to them.
It works in the order the craft itself runs — first, Module 1 — Finding a Problem Worth Solving — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Opportunity Brief; then, Module 2 — Building, Launching, Learning — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Bet You Can Defend.
You work on one product, in full, for the whole course — Kestrel Desk, a shared-inbox product for small online shops, with its customers, its prices, its funnel, and its interview record stated once, in full. Every sizing starts from those figures. Every prioritization scores them. Every metric chain traces them.
You finish by proving the whole course — in The Opportunity Brief and in The Bet You Can Defend. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. Defending an opportunity, arguing a tradeoff, and walking a leader through a launch result are spoken acts, done live — the skill lives in what you can say.
The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.
Both capstones produce real artifacts — an opportunity brief a leadership team could fund or refuse, and a build-and-launch plan for the chosen bet, defended in writing — written to be usable on the real job, not just in the course.
This is the one hundred and forty-first course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone
Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.
Diagnose
The Coach starts where the course starts: with the problem before the product. A team cannot build its way out of a problem it never found. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.
Learn & Practice
Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.
Prove
Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.
Capstone
Finish with two capstones — The Opportunity Brief for Module 1 and The Bet You Can Defend for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.
What You'll Learn
Every product is a bet. Someone decided that a group of people had a problem worth solving, that a particular solution would solve it, and that building that solution was a better use of the next three months than anything else the team could have done. Product management is the craft of making those bets well — and of knowing, afterward, whether you won.
This course teaches the whole craft in order. You will learn how to find a problem in a customer's actual week rather than in your own imagination; how to turn scattered interviews into patterns you can defend; how to frame the job a customer is hiring a product to do; how to size an opportunity honestly and judge how strong your evidence really is; how to choose whom to serve first; and how to state an opportunity so clearly that a team can build from it.
Then you will build: how to turn an opportunity into a small, testable bet; how to roadmap without lying about the future; how to write requirements a builder can act on without a follow-up meeting; how to work with design and with engineering as partners in different kinds of judgment; how to launch in a way you can reverse; how to choose metrics that measure the customer's progress rather than your own activity; and how to read a result and decide — iterate, persevere, or stop — without flinching.
It is the working method, taught on one working product — general product management for software and digital products, worked end to end on a single product record you can check yourself, figure by figure.
What you will learn
- Discover problems from customer evidence — interviews, observation, and behavior — without leading the witness
- Synthesize discovery into patterns, jobs, and pains you can defend in a room
- Size an opportunity and judge the strength of the evidence behind it
- Choose a first segment and state an opportunity a team can act on
- Prioritize work by value, cost, and risk — and explain the reasoning, not just the score
- Turn an opportunity into a testable bet, a roadmap, and requirements builders can use
- Work with design and engineering through build and launch
- Choose product metrics, read results, and decide whether to iterate, persevere, or stop
Everything in the course

Built for the person who places the bets
Product Management Foundations is for new product managers — in their first role or moving into one — who need the full craft in order, not a bag of tips, and for founders and owner-operators who are their own product manager whether they use the title or not.
It is for designers, engineers, and analysts moving toward product work — who already own part of the craft and want the whole picture, including the parts they have only watched — and for managers of product people, who want to know which questions expose a weak bet.
This is a Leadership & Management course. It assumes you have worked in or around a team that ships something — a product, a service, a site. It assumes no prior product title. If you can describe a customer, do arithmetic with percentages, and write a clear paragraph, you have everything this course requires to start.
