Project Management Principles & Practice

Signature Course No. 177 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.

An agentic, mastery-based AI learning platform.

A New Kind of Learning

Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.

Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.

The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.

The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.

Meet The Lighthouse Coach

A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing

The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Project Management Principles & Practice course, in the Leadership & Management category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.

You work on one consistent set of figures throughout — one running project, the Outpatient Check-In Renewal at Redfern Community Hospital, with its full schedule network and full budget stated once, in full: a $240,000, fifteen-week project whose critical path is computed from its stated durations and dependencies, and whose Week 8 status — planned value $145,000, earned value $130,000, actual cost $141,000 — is recomputed from the stated plan every time it is restated, so every figure in the course can be checked with a pencil.

This is the course for project managers who carry a live delivery promise, sponsors and senior managers who authorize projects and sit on steering groups, workstream and team leads who own pieces of larger projects, and professionals moving into delivery roles who already coordinate complex work. It works in two movements: first, Module 1 — Design a Project That Can Be Kept — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Baseline You Can Defend; then, Module 2 — Deliver, Control, and Close — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Control Dossier.

You finish by proving the whole course — in The Baseline You Can Defend and in The Control Dossier.

You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.

The discipline is taught generally, end to end, on the one running project — every term, every formula, and every artifact built concept by concept, so the moves travel to a clinic renewal, a product launch, a venue build, or a systems migration alike.

Both capstones produce real artifacts — a complete, defensible baseline plan for the Redfern project, and a full control dossier for the same project at its Week 8 status — not just ideas about project management.

This is the one hundred and seventy-seventh course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

The Method

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.

1

Diagnose

The Coach starts where the course starts: with what a project is, and with the promise your own work is currently carrying. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand — what you already do well when you plan or control work, and where the common trap waits for you — and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the baseline you only think you know.

2

Learn & Practice

Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.

3

Prove

Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.

4

Capstone

Finish with two capstones — The Baseline You Can Defend for Module 1 and The Control Dossier for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.

The Course Content

What You'll Learn

A project is the most honest work an organization does. Operations can hide behind routine; a project cannot.

It has a beginning that someone authorized, an end that someone will judge, a boundary that someone drew, and a promise — of benefit, on a date, for a sum of money — made in a room and kept, or not, in the world.

This course teaches the discipline that keeps such promises: initiation on a business case rather than an enthusiasm; scope drawn so its boundary can be defended; work decomposed until every piece can be owned, sequenced into a logic network, and read for its critical path; estimates built as ranges with bases; a budget frozen as a baseline; stakeholders mapped and kept informed on a cadence; risks registered and answered before they mature; quality gated rather than hoped for; change controlled without freezing the work; progress measured with earned value — read honestly, including what it cannot tell you; and closing designed so lessons transfer to the next team instead of evaporating at the celebration lunch.

The discipline is taught generally, end to end, on one running project.

What you will learn

  • Initiate a project on a business case and a charter that authorize real work
  • Define scope and build a work breakdown structure that carries the whole promise and nothing else
  • Sequence work into a logic network, find its critical path, and estimate and budget against it — ranges, bases, and reserves stated
  • Map stakeholders and run a communication cadence people can rely on
  • Run a risk register with owned responses, and gate quality so acceptance is earned before the end
  • Control change against a baseline, measure progress with earned value read honestly, forecast the ending, and recover a drifting project
  • Close a project — acceptance, handover, and lessons that the next project can actually use

Who It's For

Built for the manager who carries a live delivery promise

Project Management Principles & Practice is for project managers — formally titled or not — who carry a live delivery promise and want the full discipline beneath the parts they already improvise, sponsors and senior managers who authorize projects and must learn what a truthful status report looks like, workstream and team leads who own pieces of larger projects, and professionals moving into delivery roles — from operations, clinical work, engineering support, events, publishing, and public service — who already coordinate complex work,

and want its method made explicit.

This course assumes you can read a table, follow a simple network diagram described in words, and work a percentage. It assumes no prior textbook study and no particular software. Everything else — every term, every formula, every artifact — is built here, concept by concept, on one project.

If you already work an area well, the test-out route in each concept lets you prove it and move faster — the bar does not drop; the route just gets shorter.
