Prompt Skills for Professionals
Signature Course No. 59 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.
A New Kind of Learning
Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.
Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.
The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.
The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.
A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing
The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Prompt Skills for Professionals course, in the AI at Work category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.
This is the course for working professionals in any function, managers and team leads who draft for others, professionals in sensitive settings — legal-adjacent administration, healthcare administration, education, and HR support — and small-business owners and independent practitioners. It works in the order the work has to happen: first, Module 1 — The Craft of the Instruction: Specifying the Job, Supplying Context, and Constraining the Output — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Brief That Earned a Usable Draft; then, Module 2 — The Professional Discipline: Verification, Protection, and Patterns You Own — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with Your Prompting Portfolio. You finish by proving the whole course — in The Brief That Earned a Usable Draft and in Your Prompting Portfolio. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. The course is self- paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.
The fences, stated plainly. The AI's output is a draft the professional owns: if your name is on it, its facts, its reasoning, its tone, and its errors are yours — the assistant signs nothing. And the honesty fence stands beside it: the tools invent facts confidently, drop qualifications they were given, and follow a flawed premise without complaint, so this course claims nothing the tools cannot do. The signature is the course's own: this course works on your own real work. One rule protects that signature, and it is absolute: bring real material, anonymized — roles instead of names, ranges instead of figures, the structure of a situation instead of its identifying detail. Both capstones produce real artifacts — a complete prompt brief with a usable first draft and its iteration record, and a reusable pattern library with the written prompting standard you will work by — not just ideas about prompting.
This is the fifty-ninth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person training Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

Write the Brief → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone
Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.
Write the Brief
The Coach starts with your instruction as it actually reads. An assistant cannot follow a brief it never received — and most disappointing outputs are faithful answers to instructions nobody would have signed if they had read them first. A vague instruction produces a generic draft, because a generic draft is the only honest answer to a vague instruction; a brief that names the task, the audience, the purpose, the context, and the standard produces work that can actually be used. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.
Learn & Practice
Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.
Prove
Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.
Capstone
Finish with two capstones — The Brief That Earned a Usable Draft for Module 1 and Your Prompting Portfolio for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.
What You'll Learn
Most professionals now have access to a general AI assistant that can draft, summarize, reorganize, and analyze at remarkable speed — and most get uneven results from it. The same person, in the same tool, on the same morning, gets a draft that saves an hour and a draft that wastes twenty minutes, and cannot say why. The usual explanation is that the tool is inconsistent. The truer explanation is that the instructions were inconsistent. This course teaches you to write the second kind of instruction, every time, as a matter of professional habit: specify a job the way you would brief a capable junior colleague who knows nothing about your workplace, supply the context the assistant cannot guess, constrain the output so it arrives in a usable shape, use examples that teach a standard words alone cannot carry, and iterate by directing revisions instead of rolling the dice again. Then it teaches the discipline that makes the craft safe to use at work: verifying facts, numbers, and reasoning before anything leaves your desk, protecting sensitive material by never placing it in a prompt in the first place, and building a small library of reusable prompt patterns that turn one good result into a repeatable working asset. By the end, you will not merely get better outputs. You will own a written prompting standard — yours, in your words, fitted to your work — and a way of working in which every output is treated as what it is: a draft you own.
What you will learn
- Specify the job so the assistant works on the task you mean, not the one your words happen to describe
- Supply context, constraints, and examples that make a first draft usable instead of generic
- Iterate against a standard — critique, revise, and direct the work rather than starting over
- Verify every output, protect sensitive material, and work from reusable patterns you own

Built for the professional whose name goes on the work
Prompt Skills for Professionals is for working professionals in any function — operations, administration, finance support, and project coordination, who use an AI assistant for drafting, summarizing, and organizing and get results that swing between genuinely useful and quietly unusable, managers and team leads who draft for others — who write the updates, summaries, and decision notes that other people act on, and who cannot afford a confident error traveling under their name into someone else's decision, professionals in sensitive settings — legal-adjacent administration, healthcare administration, education, and human-resources support, who need the productivity of these tools and a clear, practical discipline for what must never be placed in a prompt, and small-business owners and independent practitioners — who are their own staff, who use an assistant as researcher, drafter, and sounding board in one, and who need reusable patterns rather than a fresh improvisation every time.
The fences and the signature apply here, too. The output is a draft you own — if your name is on it, its facts, reasoning, tone, and errors are yours, and the assistant signs nothing — and the tools invent facts confidently, drop qualifications, and follow flawed premises, so the course claims nothing the tools cannot do — and it works on your own real work: bring real material, anonymized — roles instead of names, ranges instead of figures. The course assumes you already have access to a general AI assistant and have used it enough to have felt both its speed and its unreliability. It does not teach you what the tools are, and it does not sell you on them.
