Python for Data Analysis

Signature Course No. 123 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.

An agentic, mastery-based AI learning platform.

A New Kind of Learning

Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.

Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.

The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.

The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.

Meet The Lighthouse Coach

A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing

The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Python for Data Analysis course, in the Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being category. It does not play videos at you.

It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room. You work on one running dataset alongside the Coach throughout: the Coach teaches and questions, you load, clean, group, join, chart, and automate, and what you produce is what gets checked.

This is the course for working analysts who already write some Python, spreadsheet power users moving to code, data-adjacent professionals who must turn other teams' data into defensible answers, and early-career data scientists building the discipline that decides whether anyone should believe a model.

It works in the order the craft itself runs: first, Module 1 — From Messy Files to Honest Tables — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Dataset You Can Defend; then, Module 2 — From Honest Tables to Trusted Answers — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Report That Runs Itself.

You finish by proving the whole course — in The Dataset You Can Defend and in The Report That Runs Itself. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.

This course runs on one company, one dataset, and nothing else: every total is computed from the stated figures or from small, fully printed example tables you can recount by hand, and every percentage can be recomputed. Code is an argument, not an answer — a script does not know anything, and an analyst who cannot account for her rows cannot account for her numbers.

Statistical inference, machine learning and model building, databases and SQL, web scraping, and dashboard tooling are deliberately excluded: each is a course in itself, and this course's claim is the analyst's core pipeline, taught to a checkable standard.

Both capstones produce real artifacts — a cleaned, joined, reconciled dataset with a written data audit, and an automated weekly report that runs end to end — not just ideas about analysis.

This is the one hundred and twenty-third course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

The Method

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.

1

Diagnose

The Coach starts where the course starts: with the question, not the file. If the framing is wrong, every total built on it is wrong with confidence. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.

2

Learn & Practice

Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.

3

Prove

Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.

4

Capstone

Finish with two capstones — The Dataset You Can Defend for Module 1 and The Report That Runs Itself for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.

The Course Content

What You'll Learn

Every working analyst lives between two failures. On one side is the spreadsheet rebuilt by hand every week — copied, pasted, eyeballed, and wrong in a way nobody finds until the meeting. On the other side is the clever script nobody can check — fast, automated, and trusted for no better reason than that it ran without an error message. This course teaches you to work in the ground between those failures: Python used as an analyst's instrument, where every step is deliberate, every total is reconciled, and every output answers a question somebody actually asked.

You will learn to start from the question rather than the file; to load data and inspect it before you trust a single row of it; to clean types, dates, and missing values honestly, without quietly deleting the inconvenient parts of reality; to filter, group, join, and reshape tables while keeping count of what each move did to your rows; to work with time, text, and categories; to choose charts that answer questions instead of decorating slides; to validate your results against independent totals; to package repeated steps into functions; and to automate a complete weekly report end to end — then present the finding so a busy reader can check it, trust it, and act on it.

The syntax matters, and this book teaches it — short code fragments appear throughout, wherever a fragment carries an idea better than prose can. But syntax is the smaller half of the skill. The larger half is judgment: knowing which question the data can actually answer, noticing when a join has doubled your revenue, refusing to average what should be counted, and stopping a beautiful analysis whose underlying rows were never clean. That judgment is what this course is really selling, and it is what every concept, checkpoint, and capstone is built to produce.

What you will learn

  • Frame an analysis as a question with a defined grain, population, and decision attached
  • Load and inspect real data, and clean types, dates, and missing values without distorting it
  • Filter, group, join, and reshape tables while proving no rows were silently lost or duplicated
  • Analyze change over time and choose charts that answer the question asked
  • Validate and reconcile every result against an independent total
  • Automate a complete weekly report end to end, reproducibly
  • Present a finding as a one-page answer a decision-maker can test and trust

Who It's For

Built for the person whose numbers must tie out

Python for Data Analysis is for working analysts in operations, marketing, finance, sales, and support who already write some Python, spreadsheet power users moving to code, data-adjacent professionals who receive data from other teams and must turn it into defensible answers under time pressure, and early-career data scientists building the cleaning, joining, validation, and reporting discipline that decides whether anyone should believe the model.

This is a Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being course and it assumes basic Python — variables, collections, loops, conditionals, and simple functions. It assumes no statistics degree and no prior pandas experience: the pandas way of thinking is built here, concept by concept, on one dataset you will come to know very well.
