Python for Data Science & Machine Learning
Signature Course No. 214 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.
A New Kind of Learning
Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.
Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.
The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.
The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.
A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing
The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Python for Data Science & Machine Learning course, in the Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.
Data work fails at the keyboard, not in the ideas. A file will not load the way its sender promised, a column of numbers turns out to be text, a join quietly doubles every row, and a model reports a brilliant score on data it has already seen. This course teaches the craft that prevents those failures, in Python, end to end.
You build the working craft first. A notebook kept as a lab bench, proved by a cold restart and full run; types asked of the machine and fixed before real work begins; every load proved against its sender's claim; cleaning written in code with its price counted in rows; grouping that respects the grain; joins with their match arithmetic published; whole-column computation with hand-checked proofs; and charts that answer a stated question.
Then you make models earn their scores. Relationships described honestly before any fit; regression and classification fitted end to end; a fitting partition and an untouched holdout, with both scores reported and named; features prepared without leakage; every step bound into one pipeline; candidates compared against an honest baseline; and the whole job packaged so a stranger can rerun it.
It works in two movements. First, Module 1 — Tables Into Answers: The Working Craft — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Spring Range Review; then, Module 2 — Models in Code: Fit, Judge, Package — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Chilled Range Forecast.
Both capstones produce real artifacts — The Spring Range Review, a clean, joined, summarised, and charted review notebook for Kavella Foods' spring range that a manager can act on; and The Chilled Range Forecast, a fitted, evaluated, packaged forecast for the chilled range with its project folder, defended in writing on one page.
The honesty discipline is part of the course. Every line of code in the course book runs, and every output quoted is the output the code actually produces. Library specifics are framed in place — as of this writing, check the current documentation — and no library version number is asserted anywhere.
The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.
Python for Data Science & Machine Learning is part of The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone
Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.
Diagnose
The Coach starts where the course starts: with what you actually bring. A notebook records its cells and the outputs they last produced, but never the order you ran them in — and that single fact explains most notebook disasters you will ever meet. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.
Learn & Practice
Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.
Prove
Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.
Capstone
Finish with two capstones — The Spring Range Review for Module 1 and The Chilled Range Forecast for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.
What You'll Learn
A bench, not a document. The notebook discipline — one job per cell, narration that makes the notebook an argument, and the cold rerun that proves it — with types, loads, and cleaning held to the same standard of proof.
Module 1 builds the working craft. Selecting, filtering, and deriving with precision; grouping that respects the grain; joins whose row counts are predicted and checked; whole-column computation; and charts chosen by the question, not by habit.
Module 2 fits models in code. Relationships described before they are fitted, regression and classification end to end, and evaluation that keeps the judging data untouched until judgment day.
And it packages the whole job. Features without leakage, pipelines that cannot be half-applied, candidates beaten only after they beat the baseline, and a project folder a stranger can rerun to the same numbers.
What you will learn
- Work in a Python notebook so an analysis is readable, ordered, and rerunnable from the top — and load tabular data in code, verifying what actually arrived: shape, types, and values
- Select, filter, derive, clean, group, and join tables in code, respecting keys and grain — and work numerically in whole-column operations, drawing charts that answer a stated question
- Fit regression and classification models in code, end to end — and evaluate them honestly: a fitting partition, an untouched holdout, and metrics matched to the decision
- Prepare features, build pipelines, compare models against baselines, and structure a project another person can rerun
Everything in the course
- All 18 concepts of Python for Data Science & Machine Learning, in 2 modules
- A starting-point check first — the Coach finds where you actually stand before teaching
- Learn, Practice, Prove for every concept — no passive video watching
- A test-out on every concept: prove you know it and move on
- The Voice Coach: talk with the Coach out loud — it speaks, listens, and replies
- A personal Learner Record of your work across the course
- Two capstone exercises: The Spring Range Review and The Chilled Range Forecast
- A printable session summary whenever you pause
- The Lighthouse Coach completion certificate (Signature Series)
- Your progress is saved as you go — stop anytime, resume where you left off
Built for people who work with data
Analysts — who already answer questions in spreadsheets or by asking someone else for an extract, and who need to do the whole job themselves, in code, on files too large or too messy for a grid.
Operators and managers — who commission data work and sit through its presentations, and who want to read a notebook the way they read a report: knowing where the bodies are usually buried.
Developers moving toward data work, and career changers and students — who can write a script but have not yet built the data habits, or who have met the ideas of data science in survey form and now need the implementation skill employers actually test: a file, a question, a deadline, a notebook. The course assumes you can write basic Python — variables, lists, loops, functions — and that you have seen a table of data before; it assumes no statistics degree and no prior modelling.
