Python for Finance

Signature Course No. 209 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.

An agentic, mastery-based AI learning platform.

A New Kind of Learning

Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.

Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.

The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.

The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.

Meet The Lighthouse Coach

A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing

The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Python for Finance course, in the Sales, Service & Revenue category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.

Every investment decision tells its story twice. Once in words — the pitch, the thesis, the confident meeting — and once in numbers: what a price did, what a return cost in risk, what a portfolio held together, and whether a rule that looked clever in hindsight would have survived contact with costs, delays, and bad months. This course teaches you to produce the second story yourself, in code, and then to read it honestly.

You learn the analyst's disciplines in order. Set up an environment another person can reproduce; load prices without corrupting them and align series on a shared calendar; compute returns both ways finance uses them and know which one compounds; measure volatility and downside risk; read correlation without mistaking it for a cause; combine assets into a portfolio in code; and plot for decisions rather than for applause.

Then you test claims without fooling yourself. Judge performance against a benchmark with risk adjustment stated, build one small honest backtest with costs and delays inside it, prosecute its traps — look-ahead, survivorship, and overfitting — size positions from a stated risk budget, count dividends in total return, and report the whole so a stranger can rerun it.

It works in two movements. First, Module 1 — Data, Returns, and Risk in Code — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Return-and-Risk Pack; then, Module 2 — Portfolios, Backtests, and Honest Reports — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Backtest You Can Defend.

Both capstones produce real artifacts — The Return-and-Risk Pack, a clean, audited pack for a small two-holding portfolio, loaded without inventing history and closed with a verdict on which figures may be quoted; and The Backtest You Can Defend, a backtest report whose specification was written before its results, whose traps were audited rather than assumed, and whose limits are printed at the same size as its claims.

The honesty discipline is part of the course. Every listing is short, deterministic, and self-contained — no live feeds, no downloads, no unrecorded randomness — and every teaching figure is drawn from small, invented data stated in full, so every result can be recomputed by hand. No passage recommends that any person buy, sell, or hold anything: this is education in method, not personalized advice.

The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.

Python for Finance is part of The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

The Method

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.

1

Diagnose

The Coach starts where the course starts: with what you actually bring. A portfolio cannot hide in its data — but it can hide from a reader who only looks at the final number. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.

2

Learn & Practice

Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.

3

Prove

Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.

4

Capstone

Finish with two capstones — The Return-and-Risk Pack for Module 1 and The Backtest You Can Defend for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.

The Course Content

What You'll Learn

Reproducibility before cleverness. A working setup another person can rerun, price data loaded as evidence, and series aligned on a shared calendar — because a result that cannot survive a rerun cannot support a decision that must survive one.

Module 1 computes honestly. Simple and log returns with the compounding question settled, volatility under a stated specification, correlation read as association rather than cause, portfolio maths with every variance term shown, and charts that cannot flatter.

Module 2 tests honestly. Benchmarks and risk adjustment, drawdowns as the loss as lived, a first honest backtest, its traps prosecuted, sizing from a risk budget, and total return with distributions counted.

And it signs honestly. The auditable notebook a stranger can rerun, and the analyst's standard — five commitments, stated as verifiable behaviors, with bounded conclusions on every claim you sign.

What you will learn

  • Set up a reproducible Python working environment and run short, checkable finance listings — every result a stranger can rerun
  • Load, align, and clean price data without silently inventing or dropping history, and compute simple and log returns, volatility, correlation, and portfolio maths in code
  • Read benchmarks, drawdowns, and downside risk the way a decision-maker must, and build an honest backtest with costs and delays — naming look-ahead, survivorship, and overfitting
  • Size positions and rebalance a portfolio in code with drift stated plainly, and report a result so a stranger can reproduce it, audit it, and state its limits

Who It's For

Built for anyone whose decisions ride on figures

Managers, advisors, and analysts — you sit in reviews where figures are quoted at you, or your numbers are the ones other people bet money, jobs, and plans on; this course teaches what a return, a volatility, or a backtest result actually proves, and what it dodges.

Owners and operators moving into finance-facing roles — you must read your own portfolios and businesses in numbers before a market, a lender, or a hard quarter reads them for you, and check decisions with financial consequences in code.

Anyone starting from arithmetic, not from code — the course assumes comfort with arithmetic and a willingness to type code and read its output; it assumes no prior Python experience and no prior finance degree.
