QuickBooks & Modern Bookkeeping Tools
Signature Course No. 167 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.
A New Kind of Learning
Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.
Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.
The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.
The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.
A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing
The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's QuickBooks & Modern Bookkeeping Tools course, in the Sales, Service & Revenue category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.
This course is for bookkeepers and office managers who keep a small business's books inside bookkeeping software day to day, owners and founders who work in the file themselves or sign what it produces, administrative and finance assistants moving into bookkeeping responsibility, and keepers moving between tools — from spreadsheets, from paper, or from a different program.
It works in the order the tool itself demands: first, Module 1 — The File and the Daily Workflows — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with October, Worked and Proved; then, Module 2 — Proof, Close, and Cleanup — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The October Close.
You finish by proving the whole course — in October, Worked and Proved and in The October Close. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. Explaining a reconciliation, defending a tax figure, and walking an owner through a month-end are spoken acts, and the course treats them that way.
The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.
You learn on one business, for one full month, inside its file: Sunfield Garden & Landscape Co., a garden center and landscaping business whose complete October you set up, work, prove, and close. Every figure in the course can be traced back to the opening position stated at the start and checked with a pencil — if a number appears, you can rebuild it. That is not a burden the course places on you. It is the habit the course exists to build.
You run the complete daily work — invoicing, payments, and deposits that match the bank's reality; bills and bill payments you can prove; a bank feed examined item by item — and then the finish: reconciliation to the dollar, the sales-tax position, the payroll landing, reports read before they are sent, and a locked month handed over whole.
Both capstones produce real artifacts — the proved October workflow package, and the October close package: the reconciliation, the tax and payroll positions, the released reports with their findings, and the handover packet — written to be usable on the real job, not just filed in the course.
This is the one hundred and sixty-seventh course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone
Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.
Diagnose
The Coach starts where the course starts: with the system of record. The reports are views of one database — can you say, for any figure on any screen, where it came from and what evidence outside the system would prove it wrong? Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.
Learn & Practice
Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.
Prove
Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.
Capstone
Finish with two capstones — October, Worked and Proved for Module 1 and The October Close for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.
What You'll Learn
A generation ago, a small business's books lived in a ledger, and the keeper's craft was handwriting discipline. Today the books live in software, and the craft has changed shape without getting easier.
The program posts instantly, totals flawlessly, imports the bank's own record overnight, and proposes answers before you have finished your coffee.
It also accepts a duplicate bill without blinking, files a payment against the wrong customer with perfect arithmetic, lets a bank feed quietly double-count a week of card sales, and produces a beautiful profit report that includes a bank loan as income.
The tool does the recording. It does not do the judging — and judging, inside the tool, at the speed the tool moves, is the skill this course teaches.
What you will learn
- Set up a company file — company settings, lists, and chart — so every later report can be trusted
- Run the sales workflow in the tool: invoices, payments, and deposits that match the bank's reality
- Run the spending workflow in the tool: bills, bill payments, and payables you can prove
- Work the bank feed as proposals, and reconcile accounts until book and bank agree to the dollar
- Handle sales tax and the payroll handoff in the tool without mistaking held money for your own
- Read the tool's reports critically, run review routines, close the period, and clean a file without breaking its history
Everything in the course
- All 18 concepts of QuickBooks & Modern Bookkeeping Tools, in 2 modules
- A starting-point check first — the Coach finds where you actually stand before teaching

- Your progress is saved as you go — stop anytime, resume where you left off
Built for the person whose work runs inside the file
QuickBooks & Modern Bookkeeping Tools is for bookkeepers and office managers who keep a small business's books inside bookkeeping software day to day and need the workflows to be right, provable, and finished on time, owners and founders who work in the file themselves or sign what it produces, administrative and finance assistants moving into bookkeeping responsibility in a business that already runs on software, and keepers moving between tools — from spreadsheets, from paper, or from a different program — who know the underlying discipline and need to rebuild their judgment inside a modern, feed-connected system.
This course assumes comfort with arithmetic and ordinary business documents — invoices, bills, pay stubs, bank statements — and a general acquaintance with what bookkeeping is for. It does not assume you have used QuickBooks before. If you can read a bill and add a column, you have everything this course requires to start.
