Scientific & Technical Writing
Signature Course No. 175 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.
A New Kind of Learning
Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.
Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.
The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.
The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.
A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing
The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Scientific & Technical Writing course, in the Communication & Influence category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.
This is the course for engineers and scientists who do sound work and watch it get misread, disputed, or quietly ignored because the document carrying it was weaker than the work — for technical writers and editors who inherit other people's drafts, for quality, service, and compliance staff whose documents are acted on by people they will never meet, and for managers and reviewers who sign documents and need to know what a signature should actually check.
It works in the order a document is built: first, Module 1 — Make It Unmisreadable — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Package a Stranger Can Use; then, Module 2 — Make It Deserve Belief — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Report You Can Release.
You finish by proving the whole course — in The Package a Stranger Can Use and in The Report You Can Release. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. In this course the Voice Coach is not an extra — defending a claim in a review meeting and walking an inspector through a specification are spoken acts, done live, to a person who can answer back.
The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.
A technical document is judged by what its reader can do or safely believe after reading it — never by how it sounds. A procedure that reads beautifully and cannot be followed has failed. A report that reads plainly and cannot be doubted on the evidence shown has succeeded.
The course runs on one organization, one set of documents, and figures that tie. Every figure quoted from Halcyon Metrology's documents is stated once, in its home concept, and repeated identically everywhere else — so any number in your work can be traced back to the document where it was first stated and checked with a pencil.
Both capstones produce real artifacts — a rebuilt document package, a specification, a table, and a figure treatment that a stranger could act on and check, and a complete short technical report with its methods, results, and discussion, revised through all three passes and certified ready to release — written to be used on the real job, not just filed in the course.
This is the one hundred and seventy-fifth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.
Diagnose
The Coach starts where the course starts: with the reader. A technical document has not succeeded when its writer is satisfied. It has succeeded when its reader cannot reasonably get it wrong. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.
Learn & Practice
Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.
Prove
Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.
Capstone
Finish with two capstones — The Package a Stranger Can Use for Module 1 and The Report You Can Release for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.
What You'll Learn
Every technical organization runs on documents it barely notices — until one of them fails. A specification whose tolerance two inspectors read two ways. A procedure whose fifth step assumes a tool the night shift does not have. A test report whose headline claim is larger than the table beneath it. The work itself was done well; the writing is where it broke.
This course teaches the craft that prevents those breaks. You will learn to settle audience and purpose before you draft a line; to choose and build the structures technical documents live in; to write paragraphs and sentences that carry technical matter without bending it; to define terms, state numbers, and set units so they cannot be misread;
to present data in prose, in tables, and around figures, with every claim matched to the evidence actually shown; to write methods, results, and discussion with claims discipline — no overclaiming, limitations stated where a reader needs them; to serve expert and non-expert readers in the same document without shortchanging either;
and to revise in passes, structure first and sentences last, until the document says exactly what the work supports. Underneath it all runs one distinction you will use daily: some documents must be acted on, and some must be believed, and each kind has its own test.
What you will learn
- Settle audience, purpose, and the reader's decision before drafting any technical document
- Choose and build the structures of reports, papers, specifications, procedures, and documentation
- Write paragraphs and sentences that carry technical matter clearly and without distortion
- Define terms and state numbers, units, and tolerances so they cannot be misread
- Present data in prose, tables, and figures — with captions, references, and claims matched to the evidence shown
- Write methods, results, and discussion honestly: reproducible methods, unsteered results, claims no larger than the evidence, limitations stated
- Write one document that serves expert and non-expert readers without diluting either
- Revise in disciplined passes — structural, then sentence-level, then proof — and certify a document ready to be acted on or believed
Everything in the course
- All 18 concepts of Scientific & Technical Writing, in 2 modules
- A starting-point check first — the Coach finds where you actually stand before teaching
- Learn, Practice, Prove for every concept — no passive video watching
- A test-out on every concept: prove you know it and move on
- The Voice Coach: talk with the Coach out loud — it speaks, listens, and replies
- A personal Learner Record of your work across the course
- Two capstone exercises: The Package a Stranger Can Use and The Report You Can Release
- A printable session summary whenever you pause
- The Lighthouse Coach completion certificate (Signature Series)
- Your progress is saved as you go — stop anytime, resume where you left off
Built for the writer whose reader cannot come back and ask
Scientific & Technical Writing is for engineers and scientists — who do sound work and watch it get misread, disputed, or quietly ignored because the document carrying it was weaker than the work, technical writers and editors — who inherit other people's drafts and need a defensible order of operations: what to fix first, what to leave alone, and how to prove a revision helped,
quality, service, and compliance staff — whose procedures and specifications are acted on by people they will never meet, in conditions they cannot watch, and managers and reviewers — who sign documents, and who need to know what a signature should actually check before it is given.
This is a Communication & Influence course. It assumes you can already write a clear general sentence. It assumes no prior study of technical communication.
If you have ever had a careful reader misunderstand a document you thought was obvious, you have everything this course requires to start — the rest is built here, concept by concept, on one organization whose documents you will come to know very well.
Every worked document in the course comes from one organization, Halcyon Metrology — its specification sheet, uncertainty budget, uniformity test, acceptance run, field procedure, and drift record — stated in full, so every figure you meet can be traced back and checked.
