Software Engineering Foundations for Tech-Adjacent Professionals

Signature Course No. 233 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.

An agentic, mastery-based AI learning platform.

A New Kind of Learning

Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.

Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.

The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.

The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.

Meet The Lighthouse Coach

A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing

The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Software Engineering Foundations for Tech-Adjacent Professionals course, in the Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.

Every professional who works near software lives inside decisions made in a language they only half speak. A date is given and missed, and no one can say whether the miss was incompetence, bad luck, or a number that was never honest. A vendor promises an integration in six weeks; an engineer in the corridor says six months; the person in the middle has no way to tell who is describing reality. This course builds that way.

You learn the whole life of software in plain words. How a wish becomes a testable specification, how a design divides a system into parts that can change without breaking each other, where the data actually lives and why it disagrees with itself, what testing does and does not prove, why honest estimates are ranges, and what it costs to borrow against a codebase.

Then you follow it into the world. How systems talk to each other, how work ships in slices and releases with a way back, what reliability and security actually demand once real users arrive, and why the second year of a system costs what the first year promised to save — closing with the standard you hold as a tech-adjacent professional.

It works in two movements. First, Module 1 — Seeing Software Whole — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Technical Read; then, Module 2 — From Build to Ship to Run — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Release Decision.

Both capstones produce real artifacts — The Technical Read, a written technical read of Wrenfield Logistics' portal rebuild, with its estimate rebuilt as a range, its debt position stated, and a recommendation a board could act on; and The Release Decision, a release decision plan for the same project under a changed scenario, defended in writing and signed with its evidence paragraph.

The honesty discipline is part of the course. This course teaches concepts for professionals who work with engineers — it is not a computer-science curriculum, and no learner is asked to write a line of code. It runs on one company, one project, and one set of figures, so every worked number can be traced to the spine and checked with a pencil.

The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.

Software Engineering Foundations for Tech-Adjacent Professionals is part of The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

The Method

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.

1

Diagnose

The Coach starts where the course starts: with what you actually bring. A working software system is four things at once — code, data, infrastructure, and people — and every plan that counts only one of them will be ambushed by the other three. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.

2

Learn & Practice

Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.

3

Prove

Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.

4

Capstone

Finish with two capstones — The Technical Read for Module 1 and The Release Decision for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.

The Course Content

What You'll Learn

A running system, not a pile of code. Software that matters is never just the program: it is the program, the data it keeps, the machines and services it runs on, and the people and procedures around it — and every integration, release, and incident is a whole-system event.

Module 1 teaches you to see software whole. The running company and its spine of figures, requirements made testable, architecture and data in plain words, the engineer's real week, and quality, estimates, and debt judged from evidence.

Module 2 follows it into the world. Integrations as contracts, building in slices, shipping with a way back, reliability and security in minutes, money, and named access — and maintainability priced as the second year's real budget line.

And it builds your own craft. Working with engineers on options and trade-offs, reading a technical situation from its artifacts rather than its adjectives, and holding the tech-adjacent standard — translate, do not relay; price change, not just delivery.

What you will learn

  • Explain what a software system actually is — code, data, infrastructure, and people — and turn vague requests into testable specifications, spotting the ambiguity before it becomes a dispute
  • Understand architecture, data, and the daily work of engineers in plain words — components, interfaces, and coupling; where the truth lives; and what engineers actually do all day
  • Judge quality, estimates, and technical debt from evidence rather than confidence — and follow how software is integrated, shipped, kept reliable, and kept secure once it is live
  • Work with engineers on options and trade-offs, ask the next question that moves a decision, and read a technical situation whole to produce a decision-ready technical read or release plan

Who It's For

Built for people who work with engineers

Operators and managers — who run teams and budgets that depend on software delivery, and who need to know which questions expose a plan's real condition.

Owners and founders — who buy, commission, or bet companies on software, and who must judge technical claims made by people they cannot directly check.

Product-adjacent staff, analysts, and project and account leads — who write requests, gather requirements, read status, and carry dates and promises to customers, and who need to know what a date is made of before they repeat it. The course assumes no programming experience and no computer-science background; it assumes you have sat in at least one meeting where software was discussed in terms you could not fully test, and that you would like that to stop happening.
