SQL for Business Analysts

Signature Course No. 115 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.

An agentic, mastery-based AI learning platform.

A New Kind of Learning

Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.

Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.

The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.

The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.

Meet The Lighthouse Coach

A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing

The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's SQL for Business Analysts course, in the Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being category. It does not play videos at you.

It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room. You work on your own business questions alongside the Coach throughout: the Coach teaches and questions, you translate, query, and check, and what you produce is what gets checked.

This is the course for the analyst who currently waits for answers — who files requests, assembles spreadsheets by hand, or reuses last quarter's figure because getting a fresh one is somebody else's job — and for anyone who has been burned by a wrong number and wants the checking habits that prevent a repeat.

It works in the order the craft itself runs: first, Module 1 — Asking the Database: From Business Question to First Correct Query — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Monday Morning Sales Pack; then, Module 2 — Joining, Checking, and Handing Over — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Quarterly Review Query Pack.

You finish by proving the whole course — in The Monday Morning Sales Pack and in The Quarterly Review Query Pack. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.

The book teaches against one small sample database — three tables, twenty-six rows in total — printed in full, small enough to check by hand, and every row count, sum, and average shown is what that stated data returns when the printed query runs against it; no result was written from memory or estimated.

The book teaches standard SQL, not one vendor's product — the shared core every major database speaks — so no learner finishes fluent in one company's tool and lost in another's. Every term is defined in ordinary words when it first appears, and every query is printed in a formatting style you are taught to copy, because a query nobody else can read is a query nobody else can check.

Window functions are given a foundations pass rather than a full treatment, and recursive queries, set operations, and database administration are excluded entirely.

Both capstones produce real artifacts — a Monday-morning sales pack rebuilt end to end, and a quarterly review query pack built to be rerun, reconciled, and handed over — not just ideas about querying.

This is the one hundred and fifteenth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

The Method

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.

1

Diagnose

The Coach starts where the course starts: with the question, not the code. A query is a question made precise — and most wrong answers were wrong in the wording before they were wrong in the code. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.

2

Learn & Practice

Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.

3

Prove

Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.

4

Capstone

Finish with two capstones — The Monday Morning Sales Pack for Module 1 and The Quarterly Review Query Pack for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.

The Course Content

What You'll Learn

Business analysts are the people a company asks when it wants to know something: Which customers bought most last quarter? Which product line is actually carrying the margin? Did the change in March move anything? Too often the honest answer is a wait — a request filed with a technical team, a spreadsheet assembled by hand from three exports, a figure copied from last month's deck because rebuilding it would take a day.

This course removes the wait. It teaches the working analyst to answer business questions directly, in SQL: to translate a question asked in plain words into a query, to filter, join, group, and total the underlying tables, to handle the missing values and messy duplicates that real tables contain, and — just as important — to check the result and hand it over in a form another analyst can audit.

The language taught is standard SQL, the shared core spoken by every major database, practiced throughout on one small sample database printed in full, so that every result in the course can be verified by hand before it is believed.

What you will learn

  • Translate a business question into a correct, readable SQL query
  • Filter, sort, and summarize data with WHERE, GROUP BY, HAVING, and CASE
  • Join tables safely — including messy real-world tables — without dropping or double-counting rows
  • Use subqueries, CTEs, window functions, and dates to answer layered questions
  • Check your own results and write queries another analyst can audit

Who It's For

Built for the person who needs the number

SQL for Business Analysts is for business analysts who currently wait for answers, analysts who inherited other people's queries and have felt the risk in running what they cannot fully explain, spreadsheet-strong professionals who want the same power applied at the source without the copy-paste, and anyone who has presented a total that double-counted or a report that silently dropped customers — and wants the checking habits that prevent a repeat.

This is a Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being course and it assumes no earlier Signature Course and no programming background. It assumes you meet business questions at work and that you can do ordinary arithmetic. If you can say what answer you need and why you need it, you have everything this course requires — the querying is what it teaches.
