Starting & Growing Your Own Business
Signature Course No. 149 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.
A New Kind of Learning
Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.
Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.
The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.
The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.
A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing
The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Starting & Growing Your Own Business course, in the Leadership & Management category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.
This is the course for people with an idea — deciding whether to commit money and months to it, and needing evidence rather than encouragement — for new founders in their first two years, for side-business builders growing something alongside a job, and for owners of small, working businesses that are profitable on paper and short of cash in practice.
It works in the order a founder actually meets the decisions: first, Module 1 — Founding on Evidence — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Launch Decision Pack; then, Module 2 — Growing Without Breaking It — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Growth Plan Under Strain.
You finish by proving the whole course — in The Launch Decision Pack and in The Growth Plan Under Strain. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. Pitching an offer, explaining a price, and walking a lender through your runway are all spoken acts, and this course treats them that way.
The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.
Every figure in this course comes from one running business — Juniper Lane Candle Co., founded by Sofia Marchetti — and every calculation can be traced back to its starting figures and checked with a pencil. Enthusiasm is not evidence, and growth is not proof: you learn to start a business on evidence, and to grow it on discipline.
On business form and tax, this course teaches principles only. It states no jurisdiction's rates, thresholds, deadlines, or filing steps as fact, because those differ by place and change over time. Where a decision depends on them, you take it to your own jurisdiction's published rules and to a qualified advisor who knows your facts.
Both capstones produce real artifacts — a launch decision pack a founder could act on and a lender could follow, and a growth plan for the same business under strain, defended in writing — built to be used on your own business, not just filed in the course.
This is the one hundred and forty-ninth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.
Diagnose
The Coach starts where the course starts: with evidence. A business is not founded when it is registered, named, or announced — it is founded when a stranger pays for its offer at a price that leaves a contribution, and comes back. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.
Learn & Practice
Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.
Prove
Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.
Capstone
Finish with two capstones — The Launch Decision Pack for Module 1 and The Growth Plan Under Strain for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.
What You'll Learn
Starting a business is a chain of decisions, and the chain breaks at its weakest link. A good idea with no paying customer is a hobby with expenses. A clear offer priced below its costs is a machine for losing money politely. A profitable month whose cash is trapped in stock and unpaid invoices is a crisis wearing a smile.
This course teaches the whole chain, in the order a founder actually meets it. You will learn to test an idea against real demand before you spend on it, to name the customer and the job they are paying you to do, to build an offer a stranger can understand in seconds, and to price it so each sale leaves a contribution.
Then you will meet the money plainly: what starting really costs, how long your cash lasts, what one sale truly earns, and the exact point where a month stops losing and starts paying. You will win first customers without pretending a launch is a business, and set up the basic legal and money hygiene every founder needs at principle level.
And then — in Module 2 — grow without breaking what worked: reading each month honestly, building operations that survive your absence, hiring your first people for a role rather than for rescue, keeping cash discipline while you grow, choosing channels and growth bets from the figures, spending your own time where only you can, recognizing when growth itself is the threat, and knowing your numbers well enough to sit across from a lender, a buyer, or an advisor and be believed.
What you will learn
- Test a business idea against real demand and state what evidence would change your mind
- Name the customer, the job they pay for, and an offer a stranger understands at once
- Price an offer from its costs so every sale leaves a known contribution
- Build a starting budget, a runway, unit economics, and a break-even that all tie together
- Win first customers and read what their behaviour — not their praise — is telling you
- Set up basic business-form and money hygiene at principle level, and use your records without doing your own bookkeeping method
- Read a month's profit and cash together and decide the next move from both
- Build operations, hiring, and cash discipline that let the business grow beyond your own hands
Everything in the course

Built for the founder who wants evidence, not encouragement
Starting & Growing Your Own Business is for people with an idea — who are deciding whether to commit money and months to it, and need evidence rather than encouragement, new founders in their first two years — who have started, are selling something, and feel the business running them more than they run it, side-business builders — who are growing something alongside a job and must decide what the figures have to show before it becomes the job,
and owners of small, working businesses — who are profitable on paper, short of cash in practice, or dependent on their own presence for every order to leave on time.
Every calculation in the course is built from one business and its figures, so you can trace any number back to its source and check it yourself. On records, you learn to keep the raw material complete and current, to use finished figures with understanding, and to read what your records say — every month.
This is a Leadership & Management course. It assumes no business degree and no prior company. It assumes comfort with ordinary arithmetic and a willingness to write your own figures down honestly.
If you can add a column and divide one number by another, you have everything this course requires to start — the rest is built here, concept by concept, on one business you will come to know very well.
