Statistics for Business Decisions

Signature Course No. 146 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.

An agentic, mastery-based AI learning platform.

A New Kind of Learning

Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.

Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.

The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.

The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.

Meet The Lighthouse Coach

A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing

The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Statistics for Business Decisions course, in the Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.

This is the course for managers who are handed charts, surveys, and test results in meetings and must decide, that day, whether the number in front of them can carry the decision being asked of it — for analysts and report builders whose summaries other people bet budgets, jobs, and plans on — for owners and founders who commission studies and approve experiments — and for operators moving into evidence-facing roles.

It works in two movements. First, Module 1 — Measuring Honestly: Variation, Samples, and Tests — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Audit of a Board Report; then, Module 2 — Deciding Honestly: Causes, Models, Rates, and Reports — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Decision Memo.

You finish by proving the whole course — in The Audit of a Board Report and in The Decision Memo. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. Defending an interval, refusing a causal claim, and walking a board through a base rate are spoken acts, and this course treats them that way.

The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.

Every figure in this course recomputes from the inputs printed beside it — every probability, interval, test statistic, and regression figure — so you can check any number yourself as you read. A statistic is an argument about a decision, not a decoration on one, and this course teaches you to say, in plain words, exactly how far each figure should be trusted.

One company carries the whole course — Hollis & Beam Furniture Co., a fictional regional furniture retailer whose delivery times, survey scores, defect counts, and test results you will measure, audit, and decide on from the first concept to the last. The work is done by hand, slowly at first: no software, and no prior statistics course assumed.

Both capstones produce real artifacts — a statistical audit of a board report, with a verdict on each of its claims, and a one-page decision memo that states the claim, the evidence, the uncertainty, the rival explanation, and the decision, signed — written to be used in a real meeting, not just filed in the course.

This is the one hundred and forty-sixth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

The Method

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.

1

Diagnose

The Coach starts where the course starts: with the pile of numbers itself. Nothing in business is a single number — everything is a distribution, a sample, and a claim waiting to be cross-examined. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.

2

Learn & Practice

Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.

3

Prove

Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.

4

Capstone

Finish with two capstones — The Audit of a Board Report for Module 1 and The Decision Memo for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.

The Course Content

What You'll Learn

Every business decision is a bet placed under uncertainty, and statistics is the discipline of placing those bets with your eyes open. A price is raised on the strength of a test. A warehouse is expanded on the strength of a forecast average. A hiring plan is approved on the strength of a survey. A product is killed on the strength of a chart.

Behind each of those moments sits a pile of numbers that someone summarized — and every summary hides choices: which cases were counted, which were missing, which average was quoted, which comparison was never made. This course teaches you to make the summaries honestly and to read other people's summaries the way an auditor reads accounts.

You will learn how variation itself is information, how a distribution tells you more than any single average, how sampling decides in advance what a study is capable of finding, how estimation replaces a false point with an honest interval, and how a hypothesis test answers one narrow question — and is routinely sold as answering ten others.

Then you will work the harder half: why correlation cannot carry a causal claim on its own, what a regression line actually says and where it stops saying it, why a rare event stays rare even when a test flags it, how to update a belief in plain arithmetic when evidence arrives, and how dashboards and reports manufacture confidence through window choices, shifting denominators, and aggregates that reverse when you split them.

Finally, you will assemble it all into a standard: a one-page decision memo that states the claim, the evidence, the uncertainty, the rival explanation, and the decision — signed.

What you will learn

  • Describe variation and distributions — center, spread, shape — and say what an average hides
  • Judge a sample: who was counted, who was missed, and what bias does to a conclusion before any arithmetic begins
  • Estimate with confidence intervals and state, correctly, what the interval does and does not claim
  • Use hypothesis tests for the one question they answer, and refuse the misuses — multiplicity, significance without importance, and tests with no power to find anything
  • Separate correlation from causation, and read a regression line, its fit, and its limits without being fooled by any of them
  • Respect base rates and update a belief in plain form when new evidence arrives
  • Catch the statistical traps in dashboards and reports — shifting denominators, chosen windows, reversing aggregates, and regression to the mean — and write a decision memo that survives them

Who It's For

Built for the person who has to decide whether the number can carry the decision

Statistics for Business Decisions is for managers — who are handed charts, surveys, and test results in meetings and must decide, that day, whether the number in front of them can carry the decision being asked of it, analysts and report builders — whose summaries other people bet budgets, jobs, and plans on, and who need those summaries to deserve the bet,

owners and founders — who commission studies, read agency reports, and approve experiments, and who need to know which questions to ask before paying for answers, and operators moving into evidence-facing roles — team leads, product owners, service managers — who already make decisions with statistical consequences.

Every figure in the course is computed from inputs printed beside it, and standard table values are named as standard where they are used. Check any figure against its stated inputs — that checking is not a burden the course places on you; it is the habit the course exists to build.

This is a Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being course. It assumes comfort with arithmetic — percentages, averages, ratios — and a willingness to compute by hand, slowly, at first. It assumes no prior statistics course and no software. If you can find a mean and say what a percentage is a percentage of, you have everything this course requires to start.
