Stock Market Investing Foundations
Signature Course No. 206 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.
A New Kind of Learning
Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.
Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.
The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.
The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.
A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing
The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Stock Market Investing Foundations course, in the Sales, Service & Revenue category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.
A stock market looks, from the outside, like a wall of moving numbers. From the inside, it is something plainer and more interesting: a system by which strangers transfer ownership of businesses to one another, at prices they negotiate in public, under rules meant to keep the negotiation fair. This course teaches that system to a first-time investor, from the ground up.
You learn the thing itself before the screen. What a share actually is and what owning one entitles you to; where shares are exchanged and how a single price emerges from thousands of competing intentions; what an index measures and what it leaves out; what a broker does and what an account is; what the different kinds of orders instruct the market to do; how to read a quote without being fooled by it; and how dividends put cash in an owner's hands — and what a dividend yield does and does not promise.
Then you learn to think like an owner. Diversification and correlation; compounding as arithmetic rather than promise; the full cost stack of fees, spreads, and taxes; orders and prices under stress; the temperament traps that cost beginners more than any fee; claim-checking against primary sources; the pre-trade checklist; and the review habits of the long-term owner.
It works in two movements. First, Module 1 — How the Market Works — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The First Purchase, Audited; then, Module 2 — How an Owner Thinks — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Owner-Readiness Review.
Both capstones produce real artifacts — The First Purchase, Audited, a written market-mechanics audit of a first purchase, worked end to end and closing in a go or no-go decision on mechanics alone; and The Owner-Readiness Review, a checked claim, a costed order, and a rules page a beginner can actually follow.
The education fence is part of the course. This course teaches markets, not tips: it never recommends a security, never forecasts a return, and never presents a hypothetical growth figure as an expectation — every growth figure is an illustrative suppose, a piece of arithmetic, not a prediction. The running example, Sandpiper Supply Co., is a fictional business whose figures are stated once and held constant, so every calculation can be checked with a pencil.
The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.
This is the two hundred and sixth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.
Diagnose
The Coach starts where the course starts: with what you actually bring. You cannot own wisely what you cannot describe plainly — and most beginners buy first and describe never. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.
Learn & Practice
Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.
Prove
Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.
Capstone
Finish with two capstones — The First Purchase, Audited for Module 1 and The Owner-Readiness Review for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.
What You'll Learn
Ownership first, price second. A share is a claim on a business before it is a number on a screen — understand what you would own, then learn how its price is made, then learn how to act on the price without confusing the two.
Module 1 teaches the machine. The share and its three figures, the auction that forms a price, the basket an index really is, custody and settlement, the four order types and their guarantees, the quote reread field by field, dividends and yield, and the asymmetric arithmetic of falls and recoveries.
Module 2 teaches the owner. Diversification and correlation, compounding and the full cost stack, orders in stressed markets, the temperament traps, claim-checking to primary sources, the eight-gate pre-trade checklist, and the review that takes the price question last.
And it keeps the arithmetic honest. The figures in the teaching recompute exactly, in both directions; claims that arrive from outside — a tip, a headline, a video — are presumed unchecked until you have traced them to a primary source yourself.
What you will learn
- Explain what a share is and what ownership entitles you to — and describe how an exchange forms a price from bids and offers, and what an index measures and leaves out
- Describe custody, cash and margin accounts, and settlement — and choose among market, limit, stop, and stop-limit orders by what each one guarantees and does not guarantee
- Read a quote field by field, trace a dividend from declaration to payment without treating yield as a promise, and work volatility, drawdown, and recovery arithmetic exactly
- Explain diversification and correlation, work compounding and fee arithmetic in both directions, check any market claim against primary sources, and run the eight-gate pre-trade checklist before any purchase

Built for anyone about to own a piece of a business
First-time investors and savers becoming owners — you have money you intend to invest, or cash in a deposit account, and you want to understand the machine before you put a hand on it, with the vocabulary and the mechanics stated plainly and without salesmanship.
Employees with equity or retirement accounts — you already own pieces of companies through a plan at work and have never been taught what those pieces are or how their prices are set.
Anyone who has been offered a tip — a relative's certainty, a colleague's rumor, a stranger's video — and wants the literacy to test a claim before money follows it. The course assumes no prior knowledge of markets and no mathematics beyond arithmetic and percentages.
