Tableau & Data Storytelling
Signature Course No. 119 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.
A New Kind of Learning
Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.
Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.
The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.
The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.
A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing
The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Tableau & Data Storytelling course, in the Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.
You work in Tableau alongside the Coach throughout: the Coach teaches and questions, you build, and every figure you build is checked against the data printed in full — with a pencil.
This is the course for analysts who build views every week, managers who receive charts in every meeting and must tell a sound view from a persuasive one, presenters and operators who answer for data live in front of a room, and teams adopting a shared source whose numbers have to agree from meeting to meeting.
It works in the order the craft itself runs: first, Module 1 — Honest Views: The Question, the Grammar, and the Scales That Tell the Truth — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Honest Dashboard; then, Module 2 — Stories That Move a Room: Sequence, Emphasis, and Trust — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Story the Room Can Act On.
You finish by proving the whole course — in The Honest Dashboard and in The Story the Room Can Act On. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.
Tableau is the workshop, not the subject. The subject is honest data made legible. A chart that misleads is worse than no chart. Every dataset in this course is small, stated in full, and checkable — and every number the text states from that data must match the printed table exactly, so a figure nobody can trace is a figure nobody should repeat. No outside statistics are printed.
This course carries no Tableau certification claim and no examination-preparation claim; the word certified is used only in the product's own sense, for a certified data source — a source of record.
Both capstones produce real artifacts — a build-ready specification for an honest dashboard, with its declaration block and margin field specification, and a presentable story script plus a workbook plan and trust plan — not just ideas about dashboards.
This is the one hundred and nineteenth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone
Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.
Diagnose
The Coach starts where the course starts: with the question, not the chart. Every honest view begins as a sentence — a decision, a comparison, and a scope — stated before a single field is dragged to a shelf. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.
Learn & Practice
Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.
Prove
Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.
Capstone
Finish with two capstones — The Honest Dashboard for Module 1 and The Story the Room Can Act On for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.
What You'll Learn
Anyone can get Tableau to draw something. The software will happily chart whatever you drop on a shelf, in whatever form flatters it most, whether or not the result is true, readable, or useful in the room where it will be judged.
This course teaches the other skill: building views that make honest data legible, and stories that move a room without moving the truth.
You will learn to start from the question rather than the chart gallery; to connect and shape data with its types intact; to use marks, color, labels, scales, and filters as instruments of honesty rather than emphasis; to write calculated fields that earn their place and level-of-detail expressions you can explain out loud; and then to carry finished views into dashboards and stories — sequencing one point per screen, annotating without pushing, presenting live under questions, critiquing another analyst's workbook fairly, and publishing a source other people can trust and maintain.
Tableau is taught concretely throughout — shelves, marks cards, filter context, extracts, story points — but the judgment stays at the center, because the judgment is what the room is actually buying.
What you will learn
- Build honest views in Tableau — right question, right types, right chart, honest scales, color, and labels
- Shape data and write calculated fields and level-of-detail expressions you can explain and defend
- Turn views into dashboards and stories that carry one clear point per screen to a decision
- Present, critique, publish, and maintain data work that a room — and a team — can trust
Everything in the course
- All 18 concepts of Tableau & Data Storytelling, in 2 modules
- A starting-point check first — the Coach finds where you actually stand before teaching
- Learn, Practice, Prove for every concept — no passive video watching
- A test-out on every concept: prove you know it and move on
- The Voice Coach: talk with the Coach out loud — it speaks, listens, and replies
- A personal Learner Record of your work across the course
- Two capstone exercises: The Honest Dashboard and The Story the Room Can Act On
- A printable session summary whenever you pause
- The Lighthouse Coach completion certificate (Signature Series)
- Your progress is saved as you go — stop anytime, resume where you left off
Built for the person whose charts have to be believed
Tableau & Data Storytelling is for analysts — who build views every week and know the tool better than they know whether the view is honest — managers who receive charts in every meeting, present them upward, and must tell a sound view from a persuasive one before staking a decision on it, presenters and operators who stand in front of a room with data on the screen and answer for it live, and teams adopting a shared source whose numbers disagree from meeting to meeting because every analyst keeps a private extract.
Tableau is the workshop, not the subject; the subject is honest data made legible. Every figure must be traceable — a total that cannot be walked back to its rows, a rate whose denominator is unnamed, a filtered view whose filter is invisible, each fails the same test.
This course assumes you can open Tableau and connect to a file or a database, and that you have data of your own to work on. It does not assume you have ever been taught to judge a chart — most analysts have not, and that gap, not the software, is what this course closes.
