The Manager's Toolkit: Managing People at Work
Signature Course No. 187 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.
A New Kind of Learning
Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.
Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.
The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.
The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.
A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing
The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's The Manager's Toolkit: Managing People at Work course, in the Leadership & Management category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.
This is the course for new managers in their first year — promoted, appointed, or acting up — who need the working routines, not another description of what good management looks like from a distance; for former peers now managing their old team, whose hardest problems are fairness, friendship, authority, and being believed when they say the role has changed; for supervisors and team leaders moving into a fuller management role; and for experienced managers with no settled system, who want good practice repeatable on a bad week as well as a good one.
It works in the order the work has to happen: first, Module 1 — Stepping Into the Role: The Weekly Craft — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The First Ninety Days Toolkit; then, Module 2 — Running Performance Through the Year — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Through-the-Year People Plan.
You finish by proving the whole course — in The First Ninety Days Toolkit and in The Through-the-Year People Plan. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.
Managing people is a craft of small, repeated acts done well: the expectation set clearly on Monday, the one-to-one held even when the week is busy, the piece of work handed over with its purpose and its limits stated, the piece of feedback given while it can still help, the note written the same day while the facts are fresh, the small drift noticed in week two rather than the crisis managed in month six.
None of those acts is difficult in itself. What is difficult — and what a first year teaches most new managers the hard way — is doing them consistently, fairly, and early, while the operational work shouts louder than all of them.
This course builds the toolkit as a set of routines: first the transition into the role and the daily and weekly rhythms that hold a team, then the through-the-year disciplines of goals, records, reviews, hiring, settling people in, and acting on absence and problems while they are still small.
You will leave with words for the conversations, shapes for the artifacts, and a calendar of routines you can defend to your team, your manager, and yourself. Both capstones produce real artifacts — a first-ninety-days toolkit your team could hold you to, and a through-the-year people plan that runs the year — not just ideas about managing.
This is the one hundred and eighty-seventh course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone
Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.
Diagnose
The Coach starts where the course starts: with the role transition itself, not the org chart. On Friday you were the person the team came to; on Monday you are the person who decides — and every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, which routines you already run, and where the common first-year trap is waiting for you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.
Learn & Practice
Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.
Prove
Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.
Capstone
Finish with two capstones — The First Ninety Days Toolkit for Module 1 and The Through-the-Year People Plan for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.
What You'll Learn

Built for the person who manages a real team
The Manager's Toolkit: Managing People at Work is for new managers in their first year — promoted, appointed, or acting up — who need the working routines, not another description of what good management looks like from a distance, former peers now managing their old team — whose hardest problems are not technical: fairness, friendship, authority, and being believed when they say the role has changed, supervisors and team leaders moving into a fuller management role — taking on goals, reviews, hiring, and absence for the first time,
and experienced managers with no settled system — who manage by instinct and effort, and want the routines that make good practice repeatable on a bad week as well as a good one.
This course assumes you manage, or are about to manage, a real team with real work. It assumes no prior management study. Everything is built here, routine by routine, on one team you will come to know well.
