UX Design Essentials

Signature Course No. 112 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.

An agentic, mastery-based AI learning platform.

A New Kind of Learning

Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.

Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.

The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.

The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.

Meet The Lighthouse Coach

A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing

The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's UX Design Essentials course, in the Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.

This is the course for founders and product managers who specify products and currently judge design by whether it looks right to them, developers who build interfaces and make a hundred small design decisions a day inside the code, designers early in their practice who want the research, structure, and testing discipline that makes screens work, marketers and content owners whose pages must be understood and completed, and anyone asked to judge a design who needs better questions than "do I like it?"

It works in the order the work has to happen: first, Module 1 — Seeing the User Clearly: Research, People, and Structure — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The Discovery Brief; then, Module 2 — Designing, Testing, and Proving It Works — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Redesign That Proves Itself.

You finish by proving the whole course — in The Discovery Brief and in The Redesign That Proves Itself. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.

It is tool-agnostic throughout: it names tool categories — a wireframing tool, a prototyping tool, a shared component library, an analytics dashboard — and teaches the judgments that survive any of them. No vendor's product is taught, required, or endorsed anywhere in the eighteen concepts.

This course prints no borrowed statistics and no borrowed case results. The only numbers in these pages belong to the book's one running example, a fictional bakery ordering app called Crumb & Craft, and to the exercises built around it — invented for teaching, labeled by their context, and internally consistent, kept in their honest denominators everywhere they appear.

Where real work is concerned, this course teaches the learner to gather their own numbers — task completions, error counts, time on task — from their own users, which is the only evidence that can judge their own product anyway.

And the scope, plainly: it is not a course in graphic artistry, it is not a course in code, and it does not pretend that eighteen concepts make a senior designer.

Both capstones produce real artifacts — a discovery brief an owner can fund, defer, or refuse, and a complete redesign package — research brief, structure, prototype decisions, test results, and a measurement plan — that you could hand to a development team and defend line by line — not just ideas about design.

This is the one hundred and twelfth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

The Method

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.

1

Diagnose

The Coach starts where the course starts: with the user, not the screen. Nobody ever designed a good experience by guessing harder — you design one by seeing the user clearly. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.

2

Learn & Practice

Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.

3

Prove

Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.

4

Capstone

Finish with two capstones — The Discovery Brief for Module 1 and The Redesign That Proves Itself for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.

The Course Content

What You'll Learn

Every digital product makes a promise the moment someone opens it: you will be able to do the thing you came for. Some products keep that promise so quietly that users never think about the design at all. Others break it in a dozen small ways — a button that does not look like a button, a checkout that asks for the wrong thing at the wrong moment, an error message that blames the person holding the phone — and the user leaves, usually without complaining, usually for good.

This course teaches the discipline that separates those two outcomes.

You will learn what user experience actually is and is not, how to research real users before designing for imagined ones, how to turn evidence into personas, journey maps, and a structure people can navigate, how to design flows and screens with sound interaction and visual basics, how to build wireframes and prototypes that can be tested before they are built, how to run usability tests and read their results honestly, how to treat accessibility as a requirement rather than a courtesy, how to work with developers through a shared design system,

and how to measure whether a design works after it ships. One fictional product — Crumb & Craft, a three-location bakery whose ordering app is being redesigned — runs through the whole book, so every method is practiced on a continuous, realistic case.

  • Research users and turn evidence into personas, journey maps, and structure
  • Design flows, wireframes, and prototypes using sound interaction and visual basics
  • Test usability and accessibility, work productively with developers, and measure whether a design works

Who It's For

Built for the person who designs, specifies, or judges the product

UX Design Essentials is for founders and product managers who specify products — who write the requirements, approve the screens, and currently judge design by whether it looks right to them, developers who build interfaces — who make a hundred small design decisions a day inside the code and want those decisions to be principled rather than improvised, designers early in their practice — who can produce attractive screens and want the research, structure, and testing discipline that makes screens work,

marketers and content owners — who own pages and flows whose job is to be understood and completed, not merely visited, and anyone asked to judge a design — in a review meeting, in a vendor proposal, in a redesign pitch — who needs better questions than "do I like it?"

It is tool-agnostic throughout: it names tool categories — a wireframing tool, a prototyping tool, a shared component library, an analytics dashboard — and teaches the judgments that survive any of them.

This course prints no borrowed statistics and no borrowed case results. It is not a course in graphic artistry, it is not a course in code, and it does not pretend that eighteen concepts make a senior designer. It assumes no design background, no drawing ability, and no particular software: if you have used apps and websites, noticed some of them fighting you, and wondered why, you have everything this course requires. It works from one continuous, realistic case — and from your own product, on your own ground — one concept at a time.
