Web Foundations: How Websites & Apps Get Built

Signature Course No. 161 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.

An agentic, mastery-based AI learning platform.

A New Kind of Learning

Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.

Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.

The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.

The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.

Meet The Lighthouse Coach

A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing

The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Web Foundations: How Websites & Apps Get Built course, in the Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.

This is the course for the person accountable for a website they did not build — owners and founders who commission web work with their own money, managers and directors who brief builders and sign off launches, and marketing, operations, and service leads whose daily work lives on the site.

It works through one real commission, learned whole — a fictional specialty-food retailer replacing its brochure site with a selling website: one brief, one budget, one timeline, one counted content inventory. Every scope argument, estimate, and change request in the course is checked against those same figures.

Module 1 — What a Website Actually Is — work through Concepts 1–9, finishing with The System, in Plain Words. Then Module 2 — How Web Work Gets Done — and Judged — work through Concepts 10–18, finishing with The Commissioning Pack.

You finish by producing two documents a board could rely on — a plain-language account of a website as a system, and a complete commissioning pack for a new piece of web work: scope, estimate review, acceptance plan, launch plan, and the standard you will judge it by.

The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies.

This is the one hundred and sixty-first course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person learning Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

The Method

Diagnose → Learn & Practice → Prove → Capstone

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.

1

Diagnose

The Coach starts where the course starts: with the system itself. A website is not a thing you look at — it is a system that answers, and you cannot judge a system by looking at its surface. Every concept opens with three questions that locate where you actually stand, and your answers shape how deeply the Coach works the concept with you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.

2

Learn & Practice

Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.

3

Prove

Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.

4

Capstone

Finish with two capstones — The System, in Plain Words for Module 1 and The Commissioning Pack for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.

The Course Content

What You'll Learn

Every manager now works through the web, whether or not the web is their job. The company website is the shopfront, the brochure, the till, and increasingly the business itself — and the person accountable for it is very often a person who did not build it, could not build it, and is expected to judge it anyway. This course closes that gap.

First, what a website or app actually is: pages delivered by a server to a browser, built from a front end a visitor sees and a back end that does the work behind it, holding its orders, accounts, and stock in a database, reached through an address that has to be found before anything can load.

Then, the whole life of web work: how a brief becomes a scope, how a scope becomes an estimate, how design, build, content, and testing proceed in stages, what launch day actually involves, and what maintenance, security, and measurement demand after the applause.

And the manager's core moves, practiced: reading a mockup without being dazzled by it, telling an in-scope request from a change, accepting work against criteria agreed before the work began, and asking the next question when an answer sounds smooth and means nothing.

What you will learn

  • Explain what a website or app actually is — pages, browser, server, front end, back end, and data — in plain words a colleague could follow
  • Read a web commission whole: the brief, the budget, the timeline, and the content it covers
  • Explain domains, hosting, and how a visitor's request becomes a page on a screen
  • Judge structure, design, and a staging site on evidence — use, access, and content — not on polish alone
  • Scope web work precisely: what is in, what is out, and what a change request really costs
  • Follow a build through its stages and give feedback that a builder can act on
  • Test and accept finished work against criteria agreed in advance, across real devices and real tasks
  • Launch safely and run the site afterwards: security, privacy, maintenance, and measurement

Who It's For

Built for the person who judges web work from the outside

Web Foundations: How Websites & Apps Get Built is for owners and founders — who commission websites and apps with their own money and must be able to tell a fair quote from a padded one, and a finished job from a polished demo, managers and directors — who brief agencies and developers, sit in project meetings, approve stages, and sign off launches,

and marketing, operations, and service leads — whose work lives on the site every day — and anyone who judges web work from the outside, who will never build a page and should never again have to nod at one they do not understand.

This is a Personal Effectiveness & Well-Being course. It assumes no technical background at all. If you can use a browser and read a quote, you have everything this course requires to start — the rest is built here, concept by concept, on one commission you will come to know very well.
