Working Across Generations
Signature Course No. 54 — A Signature AI Socratic Coaching Course.
A New Kind of Learning
Socratic coaching, delivered by an agentic AI coach.
Not a course you watch. An AI coach you work with.
The Lighthouse Coach begins by discovering how you think about the subject, teaches what is missing, and gives you realistic practice before asking you to prove that you can use it. You may test out of concepts you already understand, while capstones turn the learning into a practical plan, decision, conversation, or other real-world result.
The curriculum is deliberately authored; the AI delivers it through coaching. It is not an AI randomly generating lessons.
A coach that teaches by asking — not by lecturing
The Lighthouse Coach is an AI Socratic coach built on Cognosco Learning's Working Across Generations course, in the People, Culture & Engagement category. It does not play videos at you. It holds a conversation: it asks you a question, listens to your answer, names the misconception it hears, affirms what you got right, and asks the next question — the way a great coach works in the room.
This is the course for managers of mixed-age teams, team members at every stage, senior individual contributors and mentors, and anyone who hires, onboards, or holds career conversations. It works in the order the work has to happen: first, Module 1 — Seeing Clearly: Real Differences, False Certainties — work through , finishing with The Team Map; then, Module 2 — Working Together: The Mixed-Age Craft in Practice — work through , finishing with The Working Agreement. You finish by proving the whole course — in The Team Map and in The Working Agreement. You can type your answers, or talk out loud: the Voice Coach speaks its questions and listens to your spoken replies, hands-free. The course is self-paced and always on — roughly 30 minutes per concept, about 9 hours in full, taken in as many sittings as you like. Learners who already know the material can test out concept by concept.
The fence, stated plainly. Generational patterns are tendencies observed across large groups, never facts about the individual in front of you, and age is never a shortcut for ability, attitude, or worth — the person in front of you outranks the pattern behind them. The signature is the course's own: this course works on your real team — its actual mix of ages and stages. One rule protects that signature, and it is absolute: do not share anything you are not free to share: change the names, change the figures, keep the shape of the problem. Both capstones produce real artifacts — a map of your real team and a working agreement it can run on — not just ideas about generations.
This is the fifty-fourth course in The Lighthouse Signature Series — the online counterpart to the one-day, in-person training Cognosco Learning has delivered since 2002.

Every learner moves through the same discipline a Cognosco instructor would insist on in the room.
See the Team Clearly
The Coach starts by examining your real team — its actual mix of ages and stages, and the moments where the friction shows — as it stands. The differences across a mixed-age team are real — and almost everything you are confident you know about them is wrong about the person in front of you. Everyone begins with Module 1 — no skipping the foundations you only think you have.
Learn & Practice
Work each concept in conversation with the Coach — spoken or written — then practice it against realistic situations until it holds up.
Prove
Every concept ends in proof: answer the check cold and demonstrate the skill. Know it already? Test out and take credit immediately.
Capstone
Finish with two capstones — The Team Map for Module 1 and The Working Agreement for Module 2 — that pull the whole course together, and earn the certificate.
What You'll Learn
Most workplaces now hold four generations in daily working contact — and a fifth, mostly retired, still present at the edges — and most teams have never once talked honestly about what that mix does to how they communicate, give feedback, run meetings, share knowledge, and judge each other. Instead they trade quiet assumptions: the older colleague is "resistant," the younger one is "entitled," the mid-career manager is "stuck." Those assumptions are usually wrong about the person, often unfair, and always expensive — they misdirect work, withhold opportunity, and turn solvable differences of habit into unsolvable verdicts about character. This course teaches the mixed-age craft plainly: how to see the real differences that do exist — of formative experience, life stage, and habit — without stereotyping the individual in front of you; how to communicate and give feedback across the mix; how to run mentoring in both directions, meetings that hear everyone, and knowledge transfer that respects both the holder and the learner; and how to hire, onboard, and hold career conversations fairly at every stage. The course works on your real team throughout: bring its actual mix, anonymized, and leave with agreements that fit the people you actually have.
What you will learn
- See the real differences without stereotyping the person in front of you
- Communicate and give feedback across the mix — channel, speed, formality, and frequency matched to the person, not the label
- Run mixed-age teamwork well — mentoring in both directions, meetings that hear everyone, and knowledge that outlives any one career
- Hire, onboard, and hold career conversations fairly at every stage — no cues, no assumptions, no age-based shortcuts

Built for mixed-age teams and the people who lead them
Working Across Generations is for managers of mixed-age teams — who lead people both much younger and much older than themselves, and feel the friction without having language for it that is fair to everyone, team members at every stage — early-career, mid-career, and late-career — who work daily across a wide age span and want the collaboration to be easier and the assumptions to stop, senior individual contributors and mentors — whose knowledge, habits, and standing are central to their teams, and who want to hand knowledge over well and keep learning while they do it, and anyone who hires, onboards, or holds career conversations — and wants those judgments made on evidence about the person, never on cues about their age.
The fence and the signature apply here, too. Generational patterns are tendencies, never facts about the individual in front of you, and age is never a shortcut for ability, attitude, or worth — and the course works on your real team: bring the team as it is, and do not share anything you are not free to share: change the names, change the figures, keep the shape of the problem. The course assumes you work across an age span now, or lead people who do.
